When the body’s lymphatic system is damaged or not functioning properly, it can lead to a chronic condition known as lymphedema. This disorder involves the buildup of lymphatic fluid in the body’s tissues, resulting in persistent swelling, discomfort, and sometimes significant disfigurement. At Curelogics – Wound Care & Hyperbaric Center, we specialize in identifying and managing this often-misunderstood condition to help patients regain quality of life.
What Is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema occurs when lymphatic vessels or lymph nodes are either missing, damaged, or impaired, preventing lymph fluid from draining effectively. This leads to an accumulation of fluid, often in the arms or legs, which can become painful and progressively worse without proper treatment.
There are two main types of lymphedema:
Primary Lymphedema
This form is less common and is typically inherited. It arises from developmental abnormalities in the lymphatic system and may appear at birth, during puberty, or later in life. People with primary lymphedema are born with lymphatic vessels that are underdeveloped or entirely absent in some regions of the body.
Secondary Lymphedema
More commonly, lymphedema is acquired. Secondary lymphedema can result from surgery, radiation therapy, infection, trauma, or chronic venous insufficiency. One of the most frequent causes is cancer treatment—especially breast cancer surgery or radiation—which may involve the removal or damage of lymph nodes. In fact, 2 out of 5 breast cancer patients develop lymphedema within five years of surgery.
Signs and Symptoms
Common signs of lymphedema include:
-
Persistent swelling in the arm, leg, fingers, or toes
-
A feeling of heaviness or tightness
-
Restricted range of motion
-
Aching or discomfort
-
Hardening or thickening of the skin (fibrosis)
Left untreated, lymphedema can lead to serious complications such as skin infections (cellulitis), decreased mobility, and a reduction in overall quality of life.
